Ingram House

Ingram, Alnwick, Northumberland

Details

Adrian and Jane Levien and their family moved to Ingram House in the Northumberland National Park in 2003. We are situated in the Dark Sky Park, perfect for stargazing.

The Cheviot Hills, Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Bamburgh Castle and beach, Holy Island and lovely golf courses are just some of the attractions nearby. We are on the Sandstone Way Cycle route from Berwick upon Tweed to Hexham which is a good stopping off point for walkers going from Wooler to Alwinton. There are many wonderful walks in the hills and on the coast.

Our neighbours farm the surrounding land - mostly hill farming. There are lovely walks from our doorstep, mainly uphill, but the views when you get there are worth it! The Breamish Valley has been populated for many centuries and evidence of Iron Age and Stone Age settlements can be seen around us.

Ingram House was originally the farmhouse. It was built in the 18th century as a two up, two down traditional house. Over the years incumbents have added bits - the latest work to be done was when we moved here in 2003 when we converted some outhouses into a granny annex.

The garden has been our major project. It was very overgrown and wild when we arrived and, although we are by no means finished, we hope we have restored some of what was here and added a few new bits. As with every garden, this is an ongoing project with an ever moving 10 year plan!

Our rooms are traditionally furnished and comfortable. We have a double and a twin upstairs both with ensuite baths. Our garden room, with ensuite shower, can be a twin or kingsize double. It is spacious and light with access to a gravelled courtyard. In each room is a television and hospitality tray. Breakfast is taken in the family dining room which is part of our huge kitchen. Food is sourced locally where possible.

We have cats and dogs so I am afraid we can only welcome one well behaved dog who does not mind sleeping in your car. Please talk to us about this when you ring.

Arrival time is between 4.30pm and 6.30pm unless previously arranged and rooms must be vacated by 10.30am on your day of departure.

The Church, St Michael and All Angels, is next to the Centre and well worth a visit. There are services every Sunday through the Summer and alternate Sundays in the Winter. Visitors are always welcome.

Further afield you can visit the Gardens at Alnwick Castle. The Duchess of Northumberland has put Alnwick on the map by creating these spectacular gardens. Bamburgh Castle standing on an outcrop of granite on the coast is one of the most beautiful places to visit. Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, is where Christianity came to these shores. The Farne Islands can be visited from Seahouses if you do not mind bobbing over the North Sea - well worth a visit to see the puffins and seals.

Not far from us is an easily climbed hill, Ros Castle, from which, on a clear day, you can see seven of the castles near us - Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick, Norham, Chillingham (where you can find the only herd of wild cattle in Britain), Lindisfarne and Warkworth.

We are the ideal base for walkers and cyclists looking to explore the area further. We also have bike storage and drying rooms available at the B&B.
