Situated in Scotland's stunning Cairngorms National Park in Royal Deeside, Glen Tanar offers the perfect base for outdoor exploration. This working Highland estate, cared for by the Coats family since 1905, features a diverse landscape, from rugged heather moorland and Caledonian pine forests to the winding River Tanar and the grand River Dee.

At the heart of the estate is Butler's Lodge, ideally located near the Ballroom, Coats Room, Wooden Cottage and a charming walled garden. This characterful cottage retains its original charm, with features like the under-stair “glory hole” cupboard and original doors and has been tastefully furnished to reflect the surrounding landscape. Once home to Lord Glen Tanar's butler, who in 1900 earned £85 a year with a weekly beer allowance, it now benefits from the estate’s eco-friendly biomass heating system and boasts an enclosed garden with a crab apple tree.

Inside, the cottage is well-equipped with a kitchen featuring an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer and drinks cooler. The cosy living room includes a wood-burning stove with unlimited logs, a sofa bed and a TV. Three bedrooms accommodate guests: a master bedroom with a king-size bed and two twin rooms, one of which can convert to a king-size via zip and link. Outside, guests can enjoy the garden which has a table, chairs, BBQ, bike wash, secure storage, off-road parking and an electric car charging point.

The estate offers country sports like salmon fishing and deer stalking or you can also explore the breathtaking surroundings. Walk or bike through trails lined with ancient pines, soak up the quiet solitude and enjoy the scenic route toward Mount Keen. Glen Tanar’s miles of untouched wilderness offer ample space for exploration, whether by foot, bike, or horseback, ensuring a memorable retreat for holiday cottage guests.
