Bwthyn Gilfach
Details
Nestled amidst hundreds of acres of working farmland, West Wales Retreat offers a true sense of tranquillity, space and freedom. Within this rural landscape lies the eight-acre smallholding of Gilfachweddog, home to Bwthyn Gilfach. The name "Gilfachweddog," as researched in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, translates from old Welsh as "the house of a newly married couple," adding a charming historical touch to this peaceful cottage.
The cottage’s refurbished kitchen has been thoughtfully designed to maximise space, with integrated units and every essential for preparing a full meal. Guests will find a well-equipped space with ample worktops, an oven, hob and microwave. A refrigerator provides storage for milk, wine and fresh produce, with a freezer compartment included for added convenience. While no dishwasher is available, eco-friendly washing-up liquid and tea towels are provided. With a generous supply of cutlery, crockery and glassware, there is no rush to wash up after every meal. The storage solutions throughout the kitchen ensure a home-from-home experience, offering both functionality and comfort.
To enhance the cottage’s living space, the renovated extension serves as a dedicated dining area, overlooking the patio and valley. A large table with four cushioned chairs provides a comfortable setting for meals and independent heating ensures warmth during cooler months. Double doors open onto the patio, allowing for alfresco dining when the weather permits. The dining space is furnished with upcycled pine furniture, lovingly restored by the owner. A discreet corner cupboard houses the washing machine, preserving the kitchen’s open and airy feel.
The entire upstairs of the cottage is devoted to the lounge, where original wooden beams create a characterful and cosy atmosphere. This is the perfect spot to take in sweeping valley views or watch the sheep grazing in the fields below. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the variety of birds and animals that frequent the area. On cooler evenings, the space transforms into a warm retreat with a flat-screen television, DVD player and a selection of books and films for guests to enjoy.
The bedroom, though compact, offers a luxurious king-size bed, two bedside storage areas with touch lighting, a full-sized wardrobe and additional storage. Independently heated, the room is finished with a stylish Roman blind that adds a touch of elegance. All bed linen is provided, ensuring a comfortable and restful stay. The cottage has consistently received positive feedback for its warmth and comfort.
After a day spent relaxing, walking, or cycling, guests can enjoy the luxury of the recently refurbished bathroom, which features a spacious walk-in shower. A large ladder radiator ensures that towels remain warm and inviting, adding to the sense of indulgence.
When the weather is pleasant, the patio provides the perfect setting for outdoor dining while taking in the picturesque valley views. On cooler evenings, guests can switch on the outdoor light and enjoy the warmth of the chiminea. A surrounding rockery adds to the charm of the outdoor space and guests are welcome to water the plants during dry weather.
Recognising the increasing shift towards electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, West Wales Retreat ensures that sustainability does not come at the cost of convenience. Bwthyn Gilfach is fitted with a Sevadis Maxicharger (socket/untethered version, 7.4 kW Type 2) electric vehicle charge point, located just outside the front door with direct access to the hardstanding area. This allows guests to charge their vehicle comfortably while enjoying their stay. The charge point operates through the Tap Electric app, which guests are encouraged to download before arrival.
