Superbly positioned in a quiet lane on the edge of the ancient village of Cartmel, 'Field Beck' looks like the sort of Georgian house that Jane Austen might have lived in. It is a Grade II Listed building and all its rooms catch the sun and overlook either the Priory church or the local fells. It was built on the site of the medieval tithe barn and is surrounded by a large walled garden with a pond and stream.

The house will sleep 8 adults comfortably and there are two loos, but as there is only one bath (with shower over) 6 may be a more practical number. We also offer discounts for smaller groups.

On the ground floor are a sitting room with a wood stove, a dining room, a well equipped kitchen, a breakfast room, and a scullery.

On the first floor are two double bedrooms (one with washbasin), a twin bedroom and a bathroom. Above is an attic with two further single beds and an extra TV.

Beneath the house is extensive cellars, an extra cloakroom, and a games room with dartboard, mini-snooker and football tables.

We use the house a lot ourselves and have kept as many of the original features as possible to preserve its charm and elegance. Pets are allowed by arrangement.

Cartmel is famous for its 800 year old Priory, its picturesque village square, its charming racecourse and for being gastronomic heaven! All the pubs do good food and there are several exceptional restaurants nearby, one of which, L’Enclume, has been voted Britain’s best restaurant three years running. There is a cheesemonger, an artisan bakery, a chocolatier and a micro-brewery as well as a delicatessen (home of the world famous sticky toffee pudding) and a regular open air food market. It really is a foodie’s dream.

The village is set in a lovely valley and, being off the main tourist routes, it is ideally placed for visiting the Lakes. The New York Times vote ranked Cartmel 44th on its list of best places to visit in the world.
