The Fold is a comfortable, spacious barn conversion on the edge of the village of Crosby Garrett, with panoramic views across the Eden Valley to the Pennines.
Walkers are spoilt for choice with a range of walks from the door; the Howgills are close by, the Lake District is 40 minutes away and the Yorkshire Dales begin the other side of Kirkby Stephen. This old market town on the banks of the Eden offers a range of shops and eating establishments and preserves the timeless, unhurried atmosphere so lacking in many of today’s towns. It is on the Coast to Coast route, and the yomp up to the Nine Standards is a must. A network of walks utilising the disused railways spreads out from the town, and Smardale Gill with its iconic curving viaduct is within walking distance of the cottage. The gill is now a nature reserve, crossed by a second viaduct that is part of the Settle/Carlisle line, which is just two fields away from The Fold.
The Fold sleeps two in a double bedroom with glorious views. There is an upstairs shower room and downstairs is a study (with internet if you must) and a double futon, and a bathroom. The kitchen and sitting room are open plan, with a wood burner and a fully equipped kitchen. The garden is fully enclosed and there is adequate off-road parking.
This is a very peaceful area, with marvellous night skies in clear weather. Red squirrels, owls and buzzards are regular sights, with cowslips and harebells in the hedgerows. Many of the surrounding villages have excellent inns and there is a good network of roads for exploring the area. The M6 is 10 miles away.
