Blackslade Manor
Details
Blackslade Manor is a historic and remote retreat with breathtaking views, offering self catering accommodation for up to 10 guests, plus space for two young children. This 400-year-old Manor House, one of the six historic manors of Widecombe, dates back to early medieval times and is steeped in history. Set halfway up a hill in a secluded and tranquil location, it is still within easy reach of local amenities. Surrounded by 30 acres of private grounds, the property boasts direct access to Dartmoor, with some of the moorland belonging to the estate. The views across Dartmoor and Widecombe are among the finest in Devon.
Upon entering, the hall greets you with stunning granite flagstones and a window offering your first glimpse of the moor. The sitting room is warm and inviting, with oatmeal-coloured walls, comfortable sofas, a wood-burning stove and a TV with Sky. The kitchen is well-equipped for culinary enthusiasts, featuring an Aga, a separate oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and a long oak table that seats 14. A sunroom with panoramic views, a utility room with washing machine and a boot room add to the practicality and charm of the house.
The Manor features five main bedrooms, two doubles and three twins, spread across two storeys and an attic connected by a medieval stone staircase. An additional small bedroom is perfect for babies or young children with fold-out beds.
Outside, children can enjoy tumbling on the lawns, while paddocks surround the property. A table and chairs provide the perfect spot to watch the sunset. After a day exploring Dartmoor, playing golf nearby, or building sandcastles at the beach, guests can return to fresh flowers, crisp linens and fluffy towels.
For dining out, the village of Widecombe, with the renowned Rugglestone Inn, is just a ten-minute downhill walk, offering a babbling brook, cask ales and delicious chips.
A maximum of 2 or 3 dogs are welcome at Blackslade Manor for an additional fee of £35 per week, per dog.
This remarkable property is a haven for those seeking tranquility, natural beauty and a taste of Devon’s rich history.
The town of Ashburton, just a 10-minute drive away, offers an enjoyable day out with its excellent specialist shops, tea rooms and an array of antique shops. For outdoor adventure, the River Dart Country Park is nearby, featuring activities like kayaking, zorbing, a high ropes course and an assault course, making it perfect for children, teenagers and adults alike. For larger shops and supermarkets, Newton Abbot is only 20 minutes away. The Dartmoor walking trails are exceptional, with direct access from the garden leading onto the moor. A must-visit is Haytor, the largest Tor in the area, where you’ll also find a visitor centre worth exploring.
