South Town Farm
Details
South Town Farm lies in the quiet village of Loxhore, tucked deep into the unspoilt countryside of North Devon. Here, guests are invited to stay either on the eco campsite or in the Shepherd’s Hut and immerse themselves in the natural surroundings of acidic grasslands, woodlands and wood pasture. The farm is at the heart of a conservation grazing project that uses native breed cattle to manage and expand valuable wildlife habitats across the landscape, making a stay here as much about connecting with nature as it is about relaxation.
The campsite is deliberately small, with only ten grass pitches spread across two fields, ensuring a sense of peace and plenty of space for everyone. The site is car-free and off-grid, with eco toilets and a gas-powered shower, offering a simple and sustainable experience. Mown paths lead to level pitches, with open areas left for games and central meadows allowed to grow into hayfields, cut only at the end of summer to encourage a rich diversity of grasses and wildflowers. Children can enjoy the safety of the car-free fields while adults relax in the quiet. Families with small tents are also well accommodated, as one pitch can cover two adults bringing separate two-man tents.
The site facilities include a simple wooden ablutions block with eco toilets and a warm gas shower, a covered washing-up area and an information point. Cars are left at the parking area, with large wheelbarrows provided to help transport belongings to the pitches. Lambs and ewes often graze the surrounding fields, adding to the farm atmosphere, though it does mean that dogs cannot be accommodated.
Fire pits and logs are available for purchase and visitors are welcome to bring their own fire pits or barbecues as long as they are raised off the ground to protect the grass. As the sun sets, suppers can be cooked over open flames before the night sky reveals itself in brilliant clarity, making the campsite an exceptional spot for stargazing.
For those seeking extra comfort, the Shepherd’s Hut offers a unique retreat, set in a quiet corner of one of the fields with uninterrupted views across the countryside. With its natural fibre mattress, wool duvet and recycled wool blankets, the double bed is a cosy refuge after a day outdoors. A table, chairs and armchair provide space to relax, while a woodburner ensures warmth on cooler evenings. Cooking is kept simple with a two-hob camping stove and cold box outside the hut, keeping the interior free for relaxation. An outdoor seating area, small barbecue and fire pit invite evenings under the stars, while the sunsets are best enjoyed from the doorway of the hut. With a minimum two-night stay, it is the perfect escape from the noise and busyness of everyday life, offering stillness, beauty and a true sense of being away.
Guests can wander the farm walk or explore the miles of footpaths and bridleways across the nearby Arlington Estate. The site’s position on the edge of Exmoor National Park also makes it an excellent base for wider adventures, while the beaches of North Devon can be reached in under half an hour.
