Applegarth House B&B
Details
Applegarth is a welcoming bed and breakfast set on the banks of the Applegarth Beat on the River Annan. The house offers a comfortable and peaceful stay with thoughtfully furnished rooms. Guests are warmly welcomed into the home of Andrew and Kirsteen, where a traditional drawing room awaits with homemade scones, cakes and a refreshing glass of elderflower cordial.
Each bedroom is thoughtfully furnished for comfort, featuring luxurious beds with soft pillows and crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. Non-allergenic bedding is available on request. The two en-suite rooms, Annan and Dryfe, are equipped with televisions that offer internet access, while the single rooms do not have TVs; however, WiFi is available throughout the property. Annan offers a spacious super king-size bed, while Dryfe has a comfortable king-size bed. The two cottage-style single rooms, Kinnel and Moffat, are charming and cosy and are only available as part of a booking with either Annan or Dryfe, they are not let separately.
The bathrooms are well-equipped with baths and drenching overhead showers. The Annan and Dryfe rooms have showers over the bath in their en-suites, while a shared bathroom on the landing features a spacious walk-in shower. Guests are provided with Scottish Fine Soaps toiletries in environmentally friendly reusable pumps, along with plenty of antibacterial soap and gel. Thick, fluffy white towels warmed on heated towel rails add a touch of luxury.
Each room includes a tray with a cafetière, teapot, a selection of teas, coffee and biscuits. While dogs are not allowed upstairs or in bedrooms, they may sleep in a designated area downstairs.
Dinner is available by prior arrangement and should be requested at the time of booking. Kirsteen prepares a two-course meal with menus shared in advance to accommodate dietary needs. When only one couple is staying, an intimate candlelit dinner is served in the bay window. Guests are invited to join Andrew and Kirsteen for a complimentary drink before dinner, either in the drawing room or, on sunny evenings, in the garden.
When more guests are staying, dinner is served in the elegant dining room, often turning into a lively, hosted evening. During the warmer months, guests are encouraged to explore the garden and enjoy tea outdoors. At the far end of the garden is a 12th-century Motte, the original site of the Clan Jardine’s fortified dwelling, which is now a Scheduled Monument. The Jardine Clan Gathering is held at Applegarth every four years.
A west-facing deck offers views over fields of sheep and cattle with the Annandale hills in the distance, an ideal spot to enjoy a glass of wine at sunset. In colder weather, the warmth of a roaring fire and a cosy meal indoors provide perfect comfort. There’s also an informal family room with a TV where guests can relax.
Applegarth lies along the Annandale Way, one of Scotland’s great trails as recognised by Scotland’s heritage. This scenic route follows the River Annan from its source in the hills above Moffat to the town of Annan and the Solway Firth. Spanning 56 miles, the trail can be enjoyed over four to five days and offers walkers a diverse and beautiful experience through southern Scotland. Other places to visit include:
