Porth Tocyn Hotel

Bwlchtocyn, Abersoch, Gwynedd

Details

Set on the headland beyond the sailing village of Abersoch, Porth Tocyn Hotel enjoys breathtaking views across Cardigan Bay towards the mountains of Snowdonia. Furnished with country antiques, watercolours, prints and shelves of books, the hotel has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to return again and again.

Each bedroom is individually styled with antique furnishings and artwork, while modern comforts ensure a relaxing stay. Rooms include flat-screen televisions and beds dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets with quality blankets or duvets. Bathrooms are fresh and contemporary, finished with modern tiling, thick Egyptian cotton towels and power showers, most over baths, with some walk-in showers available. Sea-view and country-view rooms feature high-quality zip-and-link beds that can be arranged as twins or a super king, while even the snug double rooms offer generous king-size beds.

Because of the building’s character and history, room layouts vary, so sleeping arrangements can suit a range of needs, from families to those with accessibility considerations. One sea-view double room includes a children’s anteroom with a full-size single day bed and an additional pull-out bed. Several country-view king rooms can be interconnected with single, twin or bunk-bedded rooms, making them ideal for families of four. A small number of cots are available, though guests are encouraged to bring familiar bedding for babies and toddlers.

Dining is a central part of the experience, with memorable meals served in the award-winning restaurant and relaxed summer lunches enjoyed on the terrace. Food has long been at the heart of the hotel’s reputation, with consistent recognition in the Good Food Guide since 1957 (the longest running outside of London) and two AA rosettes. Seasonal à la carte lunches are served from Monday to Saturday, offering everything from fresh, light dishes to locally sourced fish, fillet steaks and indulgent desserts, enjoyed indoors, in the gardens or al fresco on the terrace. Sundays usually feature a set lunch menu. In the evenings, a seasonally changing à la carte menu with daily specials is served from 7pm, with a choice of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes made from the finest ingredients available.

Guests can unwind in a series of cosy sitting rooms filled with antiques, fresh flowers, books and magazines, as well as an intimate bar area. A dedicated children’s snug with an adjoining table tennis room offers extra space for younger guests. Outside, well-tended interlinking gardens surround a secluded heated outdoor swimming pool, open from mid-May until early September. The sea-facing terrace provides a super setting for lunch or afternoon tea and leads directly onto the Wales Coast Path.

The Llŷn Peninsula, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is celebrated for its striking coastline of sweeping bays, hidden coves, sandy beaches and rugged headlands, all connected by the Wales Coast Path. It’s a dream destination for lovers of the outdoors, with excellent opportunities for golf, sailing and a wide range of watersports, while the mountains and scenery of Snowdonia lie within easy reach. Abersoch makes an ideal base for discovering the area, offering a lively harbour, golden beaches perfect for swimming and surfing and scenic coastal walks with views across Cardigan Bay. Nearby Aberdaron, perched at the peninsula’s tip, charms visitors with its historic church and National Trust beach, and boat trips to Bardsey Island provide unforgettable wildlife and birdwatching experiences. Inland, attractive market towns and further countryside adventures add to the appeal of this diverse and beautiful corner of North Wales.
