The Throne
Details
The Throne is a handsome, historic house tucked into a picturesque village surrounded by rolling countryside, once picked out by The Guardian as one of its “Fab 50 cool cottages and cabins” and praised by The Times Travel Doctor as “a magnificent house… fit for a king.” At its heart lies a vast, open-plan living space formed from the original medieval structure, its soaring timber frame and floor-to-ceiling windows creating a relaxed backdrop for gatherings large or small. Seven distinctive bedrooms and four bathrooms branch off the reception areas, allowing the house to host family celebrations, reunions of friends or special occasions with ease, yet it remains cosy enough for a couple or small group thanks to a generous discount for parties of six or fewer.
Behind the lavender-bordered entrance the old drawing room and dining room front the village lane, while everyday life flows naturally into the contemporary kitchen–living room at the rear. Cooks stay part of the conversation at the broad island and children have space to play across wide wooden floors, all warmed by under-floor heating and a wood-burning stove. Vast glazed doors open directly onto an enclosed garden where a sheltered lawn, flower beds and mature trees frame outdoor meals, barbecues or impromptu badminton matches; a trampoline and a separate barn with table tennis and bike storage promise hours of entertainment. Parking for two or three cars sits within the gates.
A pretty ground-floor double bedroom with its own luxurious shower room provides easy access for anyone who prefers to avoid stairs. Six further bedrooms span the first floor, ranging from the oak-panelled four-poster master suite to a narrow but charming “wig room” with an extra-long Victorian bed, alongside a cheerful three-bed Goldilocks room that overlooks Tudor cottages. Two ingeniously designed pod bathrooms tuck into the sixteenth-century roof space, complementing a family bathroom in the north wing where a roll-top bath invites long soaks.
Throughout the house four wood stoves, a baby-grand piano, fast Wi-Fi, catch-up television and a Bluetooth micro-hi-fi lend comfort and diversion. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped with a Rayburn, Neff electric ovens, an induction hob, microwave, walk-in larder and large freezer, while a hostess trolley keeps dishes hot for festive dinners in the formal dining room beneath sparkling chandeliers. Guests who prefer to dine out can stroll to the acclaimed Cider Barn restaurant or the village pub, and optional catering is easily arranged.
Weobley is celebrated as Herefordshire’s largest and best-preserved black-and-white village and was crowned the BBC One Show’s Village of the Year in 2017. Within a few minutes’ walk of the house you will find three excellent places to eat, a traditional butcher, a delicatessen, a well-stocked shop and a network of circular footpaths that weave through orchards and meadows. Positioned midway between Hereford, Leominster and the literary town of Hay-on-Wye, the Throne provides a convenient meeting point for guests travelling from different parts of the country and a superb base for exploring the Wye Valley, border castles, National Trust properties, historic market towns and the bookshops, galleries and cafés that make this corner of the Marches so enticing.
