White Heron Estate offers a collection of six distinctive self-catering properties set within the beautiful 700-acre Whittern Estate on the Herefordshire and Welsh borders. Surrounded by rolling countryside, orchards and vineyards, these thoughtfully restored homes provide a peaceful rural escape while maintaining high standards of comfort and style, making them ideal for family holidays, group celebrations and relaxed country breaks.

The Colloquy

The Colloquy is a spacious and beautifully restored luxury retreat set within former Victorian stable buildings, ideal for large gatherings and special celebrations. Sleeping 16 guests as standard, with the option to accommodate up to 23, it offers generous and flexible living spaces including stylish reception rooms, well-equipped kitchens and a cinema room. Outside, guests can enjoy extensive walled gardens, an outdoor heated swimming pool in summer, a private hot tub and sauna, creating a perfect setting for relaxation and entertaining in the Herefordshire countryside.

The Sherriffs

The Sherriffs is a grand Grade II-listed Queen Anne country house set in a secluded spot on the Whittern Estate, offering luxury self-catering accommodation for up to 18 guests across eight spacious bedrooms with six bathrooms, four of which are en-suite. Retaining many original historic features while being sympathetically updated for comfort, the house provides generous living space with three large reception rooms, including a classic drawing room and a cosy sitting room with open fire, a large farmhouse-style kitchen and a dining room perfect for shared meals. Surrounded by mature gardens and lawns, guests can enjoy outdoor dining, a hot tub in the summer room or explore the estate’s countryside walks and space for games and well-behaved pets are also welcome.

Field Cottage

Field Cottage is a charming, dog-friendly self-catering cottage set in a peaceful orchard and vineyard setting with panoramic views stretching from the Welsh Black Mountains to the South Shropshire Hills. The interior reflects its countryside location with rustic antique furniture and plenty of home comforts, creating a genuine “home-from-home” atmosphere. Downstairs there’s a hall, cloakroom, well-equipped kitchen and a large open-plan sitting and dining room that opens onto a south-facing terrace, perfect for family barbecues or simply relaxing while gazing at the views. Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a shared bathroom, with space for an additional z-bed if needed. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary hamper of local goodies, and amenities include central heating, Wi-Fi, an open fire, washer/dryer, TV, games, outdoor furniture and available at an additional charge, a hot tub where you can unwind after exploring the estate’s walking trails and farmland.

The Lodge

The Forge

Originally part of the estate’s historic buildings, it has been thoughtfully transformed into cosy self-catering accommodation, combining rustic charm with modern comforts. Inside, the living space feels warm and inviting with a wood burner and carefully chosen furnishings that reflect its heritage, while the well-equipped kitchen makes it easy to enjoy relaxed meals at home. The cottage’s calm and intimate atmosphere extends outside, where you can sit and take in views across the surrounding fields and farmland. With central heating, Wi-Fi and all essentials provided, The Forge offers a tranquil and comfortable base for couples looking to unwind in the Herefordshire countryside.

Gardener’s Cottage

Gardener’s Cottage is a delightful and welcoming self-catering retreat set within the estate’s gardens, offering a peaceful base for couples, families or small groups. Tastefully furnished with a mix of classic and contemporary touches, the cottage has a well-equipped kitchen, cosy living spaces and two comfortable bedrooms served by a modern bathroom, all designed to feel warm and inviting. Large windows and easy access to outdoor areas allow you to enjoy views over the garden and countryside beyond, while the estate’s orchards, vineyards and walking trails are right on your doorstep. With central heating, Wi-Fi and thoughtful extras included, Gardener’s Cottage combines rural charm with practical comfort for a relaxing countryside escape.

Guests staying in any of the six properties can enjoy the tranquillity of the estate’s grounds, access to local produce and the chance to explore the surrounding Herefordshire countryside, with walking routes and market towns nearby. The Forge, The Lodge & Gardener's Cottage's guests have use of the pool until midday. The Colloquy has access to the pool all day.

The White Heron Estate e-Bike Vineyard Tours offer a unique and memorable way to explore the Herefordshire countryside. Led by a knowledgeable guide, you will cycle through vineyards, apple orchards and blackcurrant fields, learning about the history and heritage of the farm, as well as its crops, biodiversity and environmental initiatives. The experience concludes with a tasting of the estate’s award-winning British Cassis liqueur, White Heron Estate sparkling wine, apple juice and cider. Guests can also opt for a delicious off-grid salad and charcuterie platter or a full fire-pit barbecue chef experience (extra cost), enjoyed at a rustic oak table with beautiful views and there is the opportunity to purchase favourite products before heading home.

Visiting the Area

In and around Lyonshall in Herefordshire there is plenty to explore, from rolling countryside and historic landmarks to charming market towns. Nearby Kington, set beneath Hergest Ridge, offers independent shops and access to walking routes along Offa’s Dyke Path, while the literary town of Hay-on-Wye is famous for its bookshops and annual festival. The black and white village trail showcases traditional timber-framed houses and the cathedral city of Hereford is home to the magnificent Hereford Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi.
