The Walpole is a family-run hotel dedicated to creating a friendly, home-from-home atmosphere with a warm and timeless elegance. From the moment you step into The Walpole Bay Hotel and Museum, you are transported back to the charm of a bygone era. This historic Margate hotel, originally built in 1914 and extended in 1927, is being lovingly restored to its former glory by the Bishop family. The hotel is open from March until October.

Whether visiting for business or pleasure, you will appreciate the comfort and service The Walpole offers. Enjoy our spacious lounges, flower-decked veranda, Edwardian restaurant, snooker room and our 1920s ballroom with its original sprung maple dance floor. The hotel features a full license and two bars for your entertainment. There is a verandah for guests to use and we have a wide selection of rooms available including a family room, four poster room, suites, doubles and twins.

Our Restaurant, Bar Lounge, and Terrace are open daily from 7am, offering delicious home-cooked meals. Breakfast is served from 7am to 9:30am and we have hot and cold snacks available until 9pm each day.

A highlight of The Walpole is the wonderful 1927 Otis Trellis gated lift, serving all five floors and acting as the centrepiece of our museum. The Living Museum, which will eventually encompass the entire hotel, offers fascinating memorabilia, documentation and educational displays about the Isle of Thanet, with its 26 miles of sandy beaches, geological features and archaeological remains. At the hotel you will also find The Napery, which is a gallery of art on linen table napkins.

In the area, there are numerous attractions and places of interest to explore, such as The Shell Grotto, Quex House, various museums and galleries and five theatres, including the second oldest in Britain, The Theatre Royal and the smallest, The Tom Thumb. From live entertainment at The Winter Gardens to building sandcastles, our guests will find plenty of enjoyable activities in the area.
