The Chequers Inn

Smarden, Ashford, Kent

Details

The Chequers Inn is set in the award-winning village of Smarden, widely regarded as one of the most picturesque and atmospheric villages in Kent. This family-run pub offers a welcoming place to enjoy both a delicious meal and a relaxing stay, all within a characterful historic building. From the cosy bar and inviting dining areas to the individually styled bedrooms, every space is full of charm.

Outside, the mature garden provides a peaceful retreat, overlooking the village church and sitting beside a large pond, creating a tranquil setting to unwind. All bedrooms are available to book, offering comfortable accommodation in a unique and traditional village setting. As the inn is part of a lively village pub, guests should be aware that some noise may be heard until closing time.

The Chequers Inn offers a collection of individually designed bedrooms set within its historic 14th-century coaching inn, each combining character features with modern comforts. Rooms are available as doubles, twins, family rooms and a single, many with flexible bed configurations to suit different guests. Several rooms are located in the oldest part of the building, showcasing original wooden beams, while others feature distinctive touches such as copper or brass baths, cosy seating areas or views over the village, garden or church.

All rooms include en-suite facilities, typically with walk-in showers and, in some cases, baths, along with amenities such as tea and coffee making facilities, TVs, toiletries and hairdryers. A family room provides additional space for those travelling with children, while a ground-floor-style layout is available in some areas of the inn. Overall, the bedrooms offer a blend of historic charm and contemporary comfort, creating a relaxed and characterful place to stay in the heart of the village.

We offer delicious food and our seasonal menu is served from Monday to Saturday, complemented by a selection of freshly prepared daily specials. On Sundays, we offer a traditional Sunday lunch suitable for all group sizes, with smaller portions and desserts available for children.

Smarden is ideally placed for exploring some of the most scenic and historic areas of Kent. Nearby, the market town of Tenterden offers independent shops, cafés and access to the Kent and East Sussex Railway for heritage steam train journeys through the countryside. The larger town of Ashford provides a wider range of shopping and leisure facilities, while history lovers can visit Leeds Castle, often described as one of the loveliest castles in England. For outdoor exploration, the surrounding Weald countryside offers picturesque walking and cycling routes, along with charming villages and traditional pubs to discover along the way.
