Greystones

Staithes, North Yorkshire
Sleeps: 1 to 9

Details

Greystones is a charming late 17th Century Grade II listed house standing on the High Street right in the heart of the historic fishing village of Staithes. It was originally a village inn called the Golden Lion – and reputedly a hotbed of smuggling activity - now it is a spacious and characterful holiday get-away sleeping 9 people in 5 bedrooms where you can self cater in comfort and style.

Inside, the house is cosy yet spacious and is decorated and furnished in a relaxing but fresh style. There are some special points of interest such as the huge old ship’s timber built into the exposed stone wall in the dining area, an old range in the snug and intriguing arrangement of staircases going to different parts of the house. The pretty open fire in the lounge adds a touch of romance too.

Greystones can sleep 9 in comfort in 5 bedrooms with three bathrooms shared between them. There is a cosy lounge, the snug and a good-sized, well-equipped dining kitchen where everyone can eat together. The whole house is well equipped to be comfortable and practical with extras such as a high-quality dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier, sound systems, TVs, DVDs and internet access. Special effort has gone into ensuring each guest has a good night’s sleep so you will find the bedrooms have large beds, pocket sprung mattresses and superior quality pillows and variable weight duvets. Greystones is a non-smoking house.

You meet the old part of the village of Staithes as you follow the road as it plunges steeply down from Bank Top – cottages start to line the road, you turn a corner and there before you is the cobbled High Street with its collection of cottages, old inns and fascinating little shops. Following along the street you catch glimpses along alleys and pathways to the cottages, houses, chapels and workshops that are packed in apparently higgledy-piggledy fashion on either side in the steep valley running down to the sea between the dramatic cliffs.

Further along, just before you reach the Cod and Lobster, you get a sudden burst of sea view - the sky above the horizon is always different and lively here and you quickly realise why Staithes has attracted so many artists to its many and varied vistas for the last hundred years or so. A few yards further on and you are on the front with the full view of the beach and harbour there before you, framed between the sheltering cliffs.
