The Holly Bush Inn

Greenhaugh, Bellingham, Northumberland

Details

The Holly Bush is an old drovers’ inn dating back more than 300 years, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere steeped in history where a glowing log fire and good company in the bar help guests feel at home almost immediately. We are located in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, home to red squirrels and surrounded by fantastic countryside, and we are also within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, where minimal light pollution creates exceptionally dark skies and outstanding opportunities for stargazing.

We offer seven individually styled en suite bedrooms, ranging from cosy doubles and singles to larger family-friendly rooms that can be set up with twin beds. Guests can choose quieter accommodation in the adjoining cottage, including rooms like Gatehouse, Waterhead and Highgreen, or stay in classic inn rooms such as Boughthill and Black Middens, some with bath and shower facilities and beautiful valley views. All rooms are equipped with modern bathrooms and comfortable beds, with check-in from 4 pm and the option to request earlier arrival when possible. The inn has earned multiple TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence and consecutive Travellers’ Choice awards for its welcoming hospitality and countryside setting.

At The Holly Bush Inn we pride ourselves on serving freshly prepared, homemade dishes with a menu that evolves throughout the year to reflect the seasons and the best locally sourced ingredients available. Breakfast is served seven days a week and includes a hearty Full English, our popular Border Breakfast and a selection of vegetarian options, all made using quality local produce. In the evening, guests can enjoy wholesome, home-cooked meals in our cosy restaurant, with both vegan and vegetarian choices available. As we operate a small kitchen, availability is limited and tables tend to fill quickly, so booking is recommended.

Greenhaugh is surrounded by plenty of attractions for visitors to explore, from scenic walks along the Greenhaugh Burn and through hay meadows in the Northumberland National Park to the dramatic cascades of Hareshaw Linn waterfall just a short distance away. History lovers can seek out the ruins of Black Middens Bastle House or visit the nearby Bellingham Heritage Centre to learn more about local heritage. The wider region also offers outstanding outdoor experiences including Kielder Water and Forest Park with its vast woodlands and lakes, the Kielder Observatory for stargazing and the opportunity to discover sections of Hadrian’s Wall and Roman forts such as Housesteads. There are charming market towns like Bellingham and Hexham to browse, with cafes, gardens and historic sites awaiting exploration in this beautiful corner of Northumberland.
