Corkaquina
Details
Set in its own grounds in a picturesque rural location overlooking Marwick Bay in Birsay, Corkaquina is an authentic Orkney stone cottage with a rich history. Built over a century ago, it has been lovingly restored to preserve its original charm. The cottage retains its traditional stone walls and flagstone roof, while inside, exposed roof timbers, a stone chimney and flagstone flooring create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Modern comforts, such as cosy underfloor heating, ensure a comfortable stay.
The heart of the cottage is the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, featuring a picture window that frames stunning views of Marwick Bay and its sunsets. The cottage includes a double bedroom in the “ben end,” a second bedroom with two bunk beds and a shower room. The outhouse provides a washroom with an automatic washing machine and storage for outdoor gear. Guests can enjoy modern amenities like Broadband Wi-Fi, a DVD player and a Hi-Fi system with an iPod dock, along with an Orkney welcome pack on arrival.
Relax amidst the birdsong of larks, oystercatchers and curlews, or catch a glimpse of the rare corncrake during long summer evenings. Hen harriers and other birds of prey are also frequent visitors. The nearby shoreline offers peaceful walks, where you can explore old fishermen’s huts or take a cliff-top walk to Kitchener's Memorial, where you may even spot puffins among the vibrant birdlife.
