Evas Howe Lodge

Dounby, Orkney
Sleeps: 1 to 2

Details

Evas Howe Lodge is ideally situated for exploring Orkney Mainland. Located about four miles from the Bay of Skaill, with its striking rock formations, sandy beach and the world-renowned Skara Brae, the lodge offers a central base for visiting key historical sites. It is approximately six miles from the Standing Stones of Stenness, Maeshowe and the Ring of Brodgar, making it perfect for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The lodge, like the nearby cottage, is set on a croft and offers stunning panoramic views across to the hills of Hoy and the Loch of Harray. Recently completed, the property provides a peaceful retreat where guests can unwind and take in the beautiful countryside. It's a great location for spotting wildlife, especially birds and hares, thanks to the wide open landscapes surrounding it.

Inside, Evas Howe features a separate bedroom with a double bed, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and a modern shower room with underfloor heating and a heated towel rail. The living room includes patio doors that open onto a decked patio, ideal for soaking up the sun or enjoying breathtaking sunsets. Because of the area's dark skies, the lodge is also an excellent spot for stargazing or even catching a glimpse of the northern lights.

For added comfort, the lodge has electric panel heaters and a small wood-burning stove to keep things cosy during the cooler months. It is partially powered by renewable energy and is on track to become almost entirely off-grid in the near future.

Stromness lies about eight miles away, while Kirkwall is around fourteen miles from the property. The Brough of Birsay is easily accessible and offers scenic coastal walks, as do Marwick Bay and Marwick Head. Just around the corner, the Old Swartland Road, a picturesque footpath running along fields and the Loch of Harray, leads to The Merkister Hotel, making it a delightful summer evening walk for a meal or drink.

The West Mainland is rich in local crafts, art, and history, with several small museums and charming tearooms scattered throughout the region. Orkney itself is home to thirteen bird reserves, six of which are within a ten-mile radius of the lodge. The sun-lounge’s patio window offers a fantastic vantage point for observing the wide variety of birdlife that visits the marshland area just beyond the lodge. This ever-changing view makes Evas Howe Lodge a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers throughout the year.

Children by arrangement, the lodge is mainly for couples, but we can accommodate a small child or baby if you bring your own travel cot, please enquire.
