Bamff Estate

Bamff, Perthshire, Highlands
Sleeps: 1 to 4

Details

The Bamff Estate can be found in the uplands of north East Perthshire and is a great place to stay for those who want to explore the Scottish Highlands. The estate is run with an emphasis on environmental management. There is both sheep and cattle on site as well as native and small commercial woods. We also have a wetland restoration project with beavers, which is the 1st of its kind in the UK. Our on site holiday homes really are the best places to visit for those who want a relaxing break away, from the stresses of modern day living.

The Gate Lodge

There is one double room and one bunk room. The sitting room has wood burning central heating (with electrical back-up). It has a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom with a shower over bath. The furniture and fittings include pieces of antique and vintage character.

The Old Brewhouse features two bedrooms: one double and one twin, which can be converted into a super king-size upon request. The dining room can also be transformed into a single bedroom with a comfortable z-bed if needed. The accommodation includes a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a bath/shower and a porch with a washing machine and deep freeze.

The dining room includes a wood-burning stove, a table with four dining chairs and two basket chairs. The fully equipped kitchen has a small table with two chairs. There is also a toilet on the ground floor and a utility room near the back door. Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts a king-size bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers. The twin bedroom is furnished with a wardrobe and a chest of drawers as well. The bathroom offers a restored roll-top bath and a separate shower. Outside, the large private garden is fully enclosed and features a patio with outdoor furniture.

Burnieshed Cabin

This cabin sleeps 2 but can accommodate one or two small children with their own bedding. The cabin features a large deck, a double bed (accessible from one side only), a wood-burning stove, a camping gas cooker and a freezer box. It has its own composting toilet but no shower; however, you may use the shower located at the back of Bamff House. The Burnieshed cabin is accessible only by footpath, approximately a ten-minute walk from the car park along the Burnieshed path, which features many beaver dams. There is no electricity, wifi, or running water at the Burnieshed Cabin, but you can (usually) get a mobile signal nearby.

The Hideaway

The Hideaway is nestled along a picturesque woodland footpath on the Cateran Trail, overlooking two beaver ponds and a beaver dam. Inside, you'll find a four-poster bed crafted from beaver-cut wood, a wood-burning stove, two armchairs and a coffee table. There is also a table for boiling a kettle or cooking on a camping gas stove. The Hideaway usually features an off-grid shower, but it may be decommissioned in winter due to susceptibility to hard frosts. During these times, you can use the shower near the honesty shop at the main house. There is also a composting toilet in the woods behind the Hideaway. Powered by a solar panel on the roof and a car battery, the fairy lights, lamps, USB charging point and shower are functional year-round with modest use. The shower's water is supplied from a rainwater barrel. A z-bed can be set up upon request for a small extra charge, or you can use it with your own bedding at no cost. There is also a hammock available, which might be suitable for a child. The Hideaway is fully equipped with bed linen, towels, pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, and candles. An initial basket of firewood is provided, with additional firewood available for purchase at the honesty shop.

Birder's Bothy

The Birder’s Bothy is an off-grid shepherd’s hut with a veranda, situated in a sunny spot within the open woodland behind Bamff Castle. This bothy is custom-made from all-natural materials, featuring wool insulation and hessian blinds. Lighting is provided by a solar panel. Outside, there is a table, a barbecue, and a fire-pit shared with the Rewilder’s Hut. Inside, the Birder’s Bothy includes a double bed, full-sized single bunks, a wood-burning stove and a table with chairs for four. Entry is through a compact kitchen equipped with a two-ring gas stove, sink and everything necessary to prepare a simple meal. Approximately 90 metres away, there is a loo and shower room, shared with the Rewilder’s Hut. Parking is available within 30 meters of the accommodation.

Rewilder's Hut

This is Bamff’s original Shepherd’s hut. Chic and cosy, the hut is custom-made from all-natural materials, featuring wool insulation and hessian blinds. Completely off-grid, it is located in open woodland facing south, behind the castle. The hut includes one double bed, a wood-burning stove, a small kitchen with a gas cooker and solar-powered lighting.

The wild beaver population at Bamff has been steadily growing since their introduction in 2002. Apart from the interest of the beaver dams and pools Bamff also has its own little hills, Hilton and Balduff. Balduff Hill – the further and higher of the two takes about 1 hour to walk up. On a clear day the views are well worth the walk – a circle of hills with Glenshee to the North, the Sidlaws to the South and the Angus Glens to the East. You can walk to Alyth via the Hill of Alyth and return by the Den o’ Alyth (or vice versa). Its around 3 miles each way. Alyth has a Hotel, pubs and cafes. Or you can take the Cateran trail and walk in either direction for around four to five hours and we can pick you up at the end point and bring you home! (for a small charge). Glenisla is about 9 miles and Bridge of Cally around 6 miles. Both have pubs.
