Birsay, Orkney

Details

The Barony Hotel is a family run hotel which stands on the shores of the Boardhouse Loch in Birsay, Orkney.

Most of our rooms at the hotel are en suite and all have tea and coffee making facilities. You can look forward to home-cooked breakfasts and well-appointed, stylish rooms. Accommodation options on offer include single, twin, double and family rooms.

At the hotel, we have a large lounge bar with views over the Boardhouse Loch and the Brough of Birsay where we serve from our extensive evening meal menu. Beef, fish and shellfish feature high on our menu as they are locally produced.

Our dishes are all prepared to order to maintain the freshness of our local produce.

Bird watchers and walkers alike can enjoy Marwick Head. Park your car in the car park and enjoy the walk up to the cliffs edge. The seabird colony comprises of razorbills, kittiwakes and guillemots.

Puffins can occasionally be spotted too. Also there is Kitchener's Memorial. A monument built to Lord Kitchener who died when H.M.S Hampshire hit a mine and sank off the coast of Birsay in 1916.

The Broch of Gurness in Evie is on the coast facing Rousay and Eynehallow. It was built in the Iron Age as a fortress, then continued to be occupied by the Picts and then by the Vikings but lastly as domestic dwellings. A worthwhile visit!
