Gorge View Cottage
Details
Gorge View Cottage is an award-winning, four-star sustainable self-catering holiday cottage for two, set in the foothills of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Originally an old gardener’s cottage, it has been carefully renovated to the highest environmental standards while retaining its original charm. Every detail has been designed with sustainability and comfort in mind, creating a place that feels both welcoming and responsible.
Tucked away on a quiet lane in Cheddar village, the cottage enjoys uninterrupted panoramic views of the famous gorge. It stands opposite the main Gorge View House, and guests are welcome to wander through and enjoy the property’s working permaculture garden. Gorge View Cottage is fully detached and ideal for one person or two people sharing, offering a private and peaceful retreat.
Downstairs, guests will find a bright and inviting triple-aspect living space with oak flooring, rugs and exposed stone walls. The room is furnished with a sofa, an armchair, a dining table and chairs, along with storage crafted from reclaimed wood. A wood-burning stove makes the space extra cosy, with starter logs available in the optional fire pack. Large windows offer views of the gorge and garden, while entertainment is provided by a Freeview LCD TV and DVD player.
The fully fitted kitchenette features granite worktops and bespoke reclaimed pine units. It is equipped with a gas hob, fan oven and grill, refrigerator with freezer compartment, microwave, toaster, kettle and all the utensils, crockery and glassware you might need. While there is no washing machine in the cottage, guests can use the main house’s machine for a small charge or make use of the excellent laundrette service in the village.
Upstairs, the bedroom is filled with natural light from casement and triple-glazed Velux windows that offer spectacular views. The king-sized bed, with a memory foam mattress supplied by Warren Evans, is dressed with organic Egyptian cotton linen. Underfloor heating beneath the oak floorboards ensures warmth and comfort, especially when the wood burner downstairs is lit and its heat rises through the cottage.
The shower room is neatly finished with modern tiling and includes a spacious shower, wash basin and toilet, complemented by a large mirror, bright LED lighting and practical shelving. Outside, a west-facing patio with a small table, chairs and potted plants provides a lovely spot to relax in the late afternoon sun. Guests are also welcome to explore the larger organic garden, with its winding paths and peaceful corners, all maintained to permaculture principles. We also have an EV charger which is free for guests to use.
Gorge View Cottage is the perfect escape for those seeking peace, nature and a slower pace of life. Walkers and nature lovers will find miles of beautiful routes around the Mendips and the gorge, while Cheddar’s caves, shops, pubs and cafés are all within easy walking distance. The cottage also makes an excellent base for exploring further afield, with Wells, Wookey Hole Caves, the Somerset Levels, Brean Down, Weston-Super-Mare and Glastonbury all within 15 miles. For a day trip, the vibrant cities of Bristol, Bath and Exeter are also within easy reach.
